In Kuala Lumpur, a big event happened at Universiti Malaya. Wong Yan Ke, a student, got into trouble for speaking out at the university’s 59th graduation. He made comments about the Vice-Chancellor, which upset many people there.
What happened next? Wong had to pay a RM5000 fine. The court decided this after thinking it over and felt Wong’s words weren’t right for the event. Even though this took place four years ago, many still remember it. It shows the balance between speaking up and being respectful at big events.
Wong, 27, is a busy student. He works at Suara Rakyat Malaysia and is studying more. He paid the fine without delay. On October 14, 2019, his comments caused a lot of talk, especially from the university’s top leader, Prof. Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahim Hashim.
The court believed Wong knew his words could cause trouble. So, they found him guilty. Wong, who works and studies at the university, paid up. In 2020, he said he didn’t mean to insult or upset the Vice-Chancellor during the graduation. The law says such actions can lead to two years in jail, a fine, or both. The case had lawyers on both sides.
