In a significant move that marks a new era in cloud communications, Vonage, a titan in the realm of cloud communications aiding businesses in their digital transformation journey and now under the Ericsson umbrella (NASDAQ: ERIC), has unveiled a strategic alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This collaboration is poised to fast-track the introduction of novel solutions to a vast audience of AWS developers via the AWS Marketplace.
This partnership synergizes the strengths of Vonage’s platform, renowned for its communications APIs and network APIs that bridge communications service provider (CSP) networks, with Ericsson’s cutting-edge 5G network prowess and the comprehensive services offered by AWS. The fusion of these technologies is anticipated to empower AWS and Vonage to craft a suite of solutions that leverage the network to spur innovation and sculpt a superior customer experience.
Kathrin Renz, Vice President of AWS Industries, shared her enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “AWS and Vonage have a shared passion for helping customers deliver innovation and value. Working together with Vonage, we aim to drive new industrial and enterprise applications across industries that combine 5G networks and technologies like generative artificial intelligence to fuel new products and enhance the overall customer experience.”
The urgency for such innovations is underscored by findings from Omdia’s Cybersecurity Decision Maker Survey 2023, which revealed that a staggering 92% of organizations had encountered a security incident or breach in the preceding year. Furthermore, imposter scams have inflicted losses of $2.6 billion in the US in 2022 alone, as reported by the Federal Trade Commission. In response to the escalating concern over fraud risks, Vonage is set to introduce a new Fraud Protection solution in the AWS Marketplace. This solution will feature the Vonage CAMARA-based* API SIM Swap (currently in alpha), its Fraud Defender solution, enhanced by AWS’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) services, and its Verify and Number Insights APIs paired with Amazon Rekognition. This initiative is a testament to Vonage’s commitment to leveraging network APIs to bring innovative solutions to the market swiftly.

The SIM Swap network API, a highlight of this suite, is ingeniously designed to enable developers to ascertain if a phone number has recently undergone a SIM card change, potentially indicating fraud. Vonage’s enhanced Fraud Defender API is poised to proactively identify fraud signals, while the Vonage Verify API facilitates secure silent authentication, and the Vonage Number Insights API offers Fraud Scoring capabilities. The integration of AWS generative AI services is set to bolster the fraud detection capabilities of this solution, offering businesses a robust defense against mobile fraud while enhancing the customer experience.
Niklas Heuveldop, Vonage CEO and Head of Business Area Global Communications Platform for Ericsson, expressed his vision for the partnership, stating, “By working with AWS, we will accelerate our ability to embed communications and network APIs in applications and deliver new product offerings for AWS and Vonage customers. With network APIs, we are exposing new capabilities from within the 5G network that have never been available before, allowing existing applications to be enhanced with network information and enabling the development of a new class of applications.”
Echoing the sentiment of innovation and security, Nick Laidlaw, Chief Technology Officer at Voicify, remarked, “Voicify already integrates Vonage’s communications APIs into our conversational AI experiences tailored for the restaurant industry. With the new Fraud Protection Solution that includes AWS and the addition of network APIs, such as SIM Swap, we can enhance the level of security we offer for SMS and telephony, ensuring transactions are secure and valid and reinforcing our commitment to providing a trusted conversational AI service.”
