The forthcoming state elections in Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu have sparked a wave of political discussions across Malaysia. One of the most significant figures shaping this discourse is Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the country’s Deputy Prime Minister. He recently urged voters, particularly those living outside of these states, to reflect on their parents’ welfare before casting their ballots.
Addressing his constituents, Ahmad Zahid cited concerns over long-standing issues, such as the recurring problem of “rusty water” in Kelantan. He said, “They (PAS) have administered the state for 33 years and their leader was even the environment minister. Despite this, they failed to address the rusty water problem, which, in my view, mirrors the condition of their hearts.” Zahid was referring to the current administration in these states, who, despite being in power for many years, has failed to ensure basic development.
The forthcoming polls present voters with an opportunity to influence change in their respective states. Ahmad Zahid firmly believes that a unity government will bring prosperity and progress to the locals of Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu. He said, “Let us ensure that the unity government is formed in the three states. God-willing, this will bring change and prosperity to the lives of locals there.” He encouraged residents outside of these states to take their parents’ wellbeing into account when voting, not wanting them to face hardship due to potentially short-sighted electoral decisions.

As part of this unity vision, UMNO is committed to not only helping form a unity government in the states of Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu but also to assist in defending Penang, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan. Ahmad Zahid expressed his commitment to a moderate and progressive Malay-Islam agenda, emphasizing that participation in a unity government would strengthen these principles.
Malaysia is preparing for simultaneous state elections in July in six states, including Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu. The outcome of these state elections will offer a critical gauge of public sentiment towards the current federal government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The vote will indeed be a crucial factor determining the political landscape in Malaysia, as the nation strives for unity and development.
As the date of the state assembly dissolution for Negri Sembilan (June 30) and Penang (June 28) approaches, anticipation heightens. Malaysians eagerly await to cast their votes in these polls, set to shape the nation’s political future. These upcoming polls represent a profound moment for the people of Malaysia to unite under a government that promises progress, prosperity, and stability, as emphasized by Ahmad Zahid.
