Technology is becoming more efficient than humans. Soon, they will automate many jobs. The use of robots has proven to be more effective. Besides that, robots have a low margin of error compared to human beings.
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation will most likely take over some of our jobs, they will also create new and unique positions.
Here are some of the industries that are likely to be automated soon or are already automated.
1. Logistic services
Many countries have started using self-driving trucks, cars, and drones to deliver goods and packages. All this can be controlled with an app. It is just a matter of time before the process is fully automated.
For now, humans are still required to work with automation to complete the logistics journey. You may soon one day see robots coming out of self-driving vehicles delivering your pizza.
2. Data collection
We know that data is an essential aspect of our private and professional lives.
Data collection used to be a manual process and it was tedious work. lt was not always efficient and accurate.
Now data collection has become almost fully automated thanks to AI and Big Data. A good example is the weather forecast where the data collected is automated and the figures are accurate.
3. Editorial work and content moderation
Editorial jobs may most likely be replaced by AI writers and editing tools. Google has extended its services, and it has now released a writing and editing tool. The tool can produce a full-fledged fictional article from the main sentence.
With these developments, we are not far from such technology becoming bigger and better. Soon a robot may be editing content and correcting grammatical errors for us.
4. Voice call agent
Several companies are implementing the use of voice bots. Google Home is capable of doing almost everything that a customer representative can do.
This paradigm is likely to occur in every industry from travel, telecommunications, and even banking.
5. Security services
Technology has made substantial advancements in the field of security.
For instance, a Yelp security robot can inspect a building using its high-definition cameras. These advancements will lead to redundancy in human involvement soon.
Robots will also be useful in situations dealing with bomb threats or life-threatening situations that could be dangerous for humans.
6. Military
Nowadays, robots and drones are regular on battlefields. They conduct surveillance, gather intelligence, and other various tasks.
Their significance proves they will be in military operations in the future.
7. Receptionists and guest services
There is going to be lesser jobs for receptionist with auto check-ins.
Some small and large organisations have implemented the auto check-in system. Even in some fast-food joints, you can place your order through communication screens and tabs.
8. Manufacturing and pharmaceutical work
This is one of the most expensive areas to automate but it will save companies a lot of money in the long run. Production activities are becoming mechanised, and the process can be made fully automated.
If you have a look at the labs of pharmaceuticals today, many are using robots to work with scientists, to provide a safer environment. They help reduce the chances of an accident or unwanted disasters from happening.
Jobs that are unlikely to be replaced by automation
So we had a look at the industries that will soon be automated. Are there any jobs that will never be replaced at all?
There are some jobs that will unlikely be replaced by robots yet as they require a combination of rational thinking, creativity, decision-making, empathy, and communication skills.
Having said that, will robots someday be able to have consciousness like humans and be self-aware? This topic has been debated from time to time. For now, it is safe to say that it is not possible.
Here are some examples of jobs that are unlikely to be automated yet.
1. Lawyer
Human lawyers are required for their strategy, case analysis, and negotiation. A robot may not be able to make sense of complex laws and fight in court on behalf of its client.
2. Politician
A robot running a country might have a disastrous outcome. Therefore a human politician is required to be fair and humane when deciding matters related to humans.
Robots may not have the capability and versatility to handle any unforeseen scenarios to govern or rule over people.
3. Illusionist
A magician or an illusionist has the ability to convince their audience that what they see is a supernatural feat.
Magic is the art of producing certain effects and it requires hours of rehearsal. Having a robot perform magic tricks will not look natural or convincing enough.
4. Clergymen
Sure, there is a robotic priest reading and chanting scriptures in Japan but it will never have the charisma, faith, emotion, and empathy of a religious leader to inspire people.
Robots can only function with the data you feed it with and have no concept of faith, emotion and empathy,
5. Writer
Writing is not an easy task as you have to translate your thoughts into words. Robots are able to analyse structured data but they will not be able to emulate a good writer.
Therefore AI can assist writers when it comes to content moderation and editorial work but novels, movie scripts and stories will require humans to come up with original and creative content.
6. HR manager
Human management requires a human because they have to manage and solve work conflicts. An HR manager also has good interpersonal and reasoning skills which is a requirement for this role.
AI can assist an HR manager to match job candidates with a certain role and interpret how candidates may work thru psychometric tests. However, some applicants may only look good on paper but will not be able to perform at work.
Therefore, the HR manager should be the final person in the interview process to make a sound judgement on whether they should hire the candidate or not.
New jobs will be created
History repeats itself. As new technology takes away manual labour and repetitive jobs, new roles will be created. Some could be even more exciting than the old jobs.
Here are some newly created jobs that exist or will be created in the future.
1. Self-driving car mechanic
The introduction of self-driving cars will eliminate many jobs, such as taxi drivers and delivery riders. But these cars will need someone to maintain and perform repairs when required. Therefore self-driving car mechanics will be the mechanic of the future.
Existing mechanics will need to upskill themselves to be able to fix these types of cars.
2. Blockchain gamer
Play-to-earn games have made it possible for players to earn cryptocurrency and in-game tokens, as well as own digital assets or non-fungible tokens (NFT), in which they can be exchanged for real money.
Most of these games are created using blockchain technology and are purely for entertainment. Someday we may see meaningful roles where players are ‘working’ in virtual worlds, also known as the metaverse, and will be contributing to the virtual society.
3. Drone manager
Drones are becoming popular with various industries and this will need a manager to organise, direct and maintain a fleet of drones.
Besides a manager, there will be other new roles created such as a drone racer and a drone farmer. If you want to know what the future is going to look like, then look up.
4. 3D printer chef
A 3D printer chef is a professional cook who prepares meals using a 3D printer. This chef not only needs cooking skills but programming skills as well.
A 3D printer will help the chef create unique edible meals which not only looks good but taste good as well.
5. NFT art curator
NFT art has been booming lately as more digital artists flood the marketplace with their digital work hoping for them to fetch a good price.
There will soon be NFT art curators and auctioneers to assist artists in promoting and selling them at online auctions.
Conclusion
Automation has increased efficiency in many fields and industries. Over the next few years, we will see many companies change their levels to high-automation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also played a role in this increase, so it is a good idea to avoid jobs that will be taken over by automation.
