South Korea’s largest telco, SK Telecom, is investing $100 million in U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic. This investment aims to enhance SK Telecom’s AI business that focuses on telecommunications.
Anthropic is a well-funded AI firm and a rival of OpenAI in developing AI foundation models. In May, the startup raised $450 million from investors, including Google and Spark Capital.
SK Telecom’s recent announcement came on Sunday. The company mentioned its plans to work with Anthropic to create a global telecommunications-oriented multilingual large language model. They also aim to develop an AI platform.
This isn’t SK Telecom’s first involvement with Anthropic. The company made a smaller investment in May. However, SK Telecom hasn’t disclosed the size of that investment or the stake it holds in Anthropic.

It was established in 2021 by former OpenAI executives. The firm’s Claude models are regarded as significant challengers to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
SK Telecom has also engaged with other global telecom entities. In July, the company entered into an agreement with Deutsche Telekom, e&, and Singapore Telecommunications. They formed an alliance to develop AI businesses driven by telecommunications.
