The Rise of Pet Parenting in India
India’s pet parenting landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. Supertails, a leading tech-enabled pet-care startup, recently unveiled insights from their survey, “Pawrents 2.0.” The study offers a comprehensive look into the current state of pet healthcare in the nation. With over 32 million pets, India’s pet healthcare industry is on an upward trajectory, potentially reaching a staggering INR 7000 crore. However, a glaring gap exists with only one vet available for every 5,000 pets, highlighting the indispensable role of tele-consultations.
Online Vet Consultations: A Growing Preference
The survey, which garnered responses from over 400 pet parents, indicates a shift in preferences. A significant 50% of Indian pet parents are leaning towards online vet consultations, drawn by the convenience and accessibility they provide. This trend underscores the challenges faced by India’s pet-parenting community and the increasing importance of online veterinary health consultations.
A Call for Improved Access to Online Consultations
The digital age has brought forth a new generation of pet parents. GenZ pet parents are on the rise, and with them, the demand for online veterinary consultations. Despite the availability, only 16% currently use online consultations. However, this number is poised to grow, with 51% from Tier I cities and 33% from Tier 2 and 3 cities expressing interest. Aman Tekriwal, co-founder of Supertails, remarked, “The insights from this survey shed light on the challenges faced by India’s pet-parenting community, particularly those seeking healthcare for their pets. It is evident that pawrents often encounter difficulties due to limited resources. Even though there are online services available for pet healthcare, many pawrents are unaware of them and hence feel the inadequacy of Pet Healthcare in India. This survey reveals the importance of creating awareness on online veterinary consultations and pet healthcare as there is a huge scope for pet care brands to solve for the issues being faced by pet parents in India.”
The Importance of Regular Veterinary Care
Pets, as cherished family members, deserve the best healthcare. Yet, the survey reveals that only 35% of dog parents and 32% of cat parents maintain regular 3-month check-ups. Additionally, the importance of timely deworming and vaccinations is often overlooked by 49% and 41% of pet parents, respectively. These figures emphasize the need for continued education and awareness on essential pet healthcare practices.
Major Health Concerns for Pet Parents
Skin and fur issues plague 51% of pets in India, highlighting the significance of dermatological care. Furthermore, 36% of pets grapple with gastrointestinal problems, underscoring the importance of digestive health. These insights shed light on the prevalent health challenges faced by pets and the proactive measures taken by their caregivers.

Challenges of Pet Parents with Veterinary Care
Accessibility remains a significant hurdle for 30% of pet parents. The data suggests that a majority of pet concerns can be addressed online with a dedicated consultation. Yet, the perception of high veterinary costs is a concern, especially among 48% of respondents in Tier I cities and 36% in Tier II and Tier III cities. This data underscores the need to make veterinary care both accessible and affordable for India’s pet parents.
In conclusion, as India’s pet parenting landscape evolves, the “Pawrents 2.0” survey by Supertails offers invaluable insights, emphasizing the need for increased awareness, accessibility, and affordability in pet healthcare.
