The new Spotify feature “DJ” offers personalized music and AI-powered commentary. To customize users’ listening experiences, Spotify has introduced a new AI feature called “DJ.” The feature will provide music and AI-generated voice commentary on tracks and artists in a manner akin to a radio DJ; Spotify claims the voice is “extremely realistic.”
The concept behind the feature is that the DJ can choose what to play for the user because Spotify’s AI knows them so well. For users who don’t want to search the interface to find their favourite music, this could make Spotify a more passive experience. According to the company, the concept is that Spotify has such a thorough understanding of each user that the DJ can make music selections for you when you press the button. Or it “puts an AI DJ in your pocket,” as Spotify puts it.
For users who don’t want to control what Spotify plays next or struggle through its UI to find a playlist, this feature has the potential to turn Spotify into a cosy, passive experience. They love to play. Currently, Spotify Premium subscribers in the US and Canada can only access the OpenAI-powered feature in English because it is still in beta testing. In this instance, the business claims that its new DJ feature is a synthesis of its current personalization technology, an AI voice from its acquisition of 2022 Sonantic, and generative AI via the use of OpenAI technology. Instead, Spotify claims it gave access to OpenAI’s generative AI technology to its music editors, experts, scriptwriters, and data curators in order to scale their knowledge of music, artists, and genres. According to the company, the technology is being used to produce “culturally relevant, accurate pieces of commentary at scale.”

If Spotify’s use case encounters similar difficulties, that remains to be seen. The new DJ feature will present listeners with a personalized stream of songs. That will mix both recent releases and time-honored favorites as they interact with it. We understand that this stream will be continuously updated. They will also hear commentary that is immediately followed by the song it refers to as they listen. On the home page of the Spotify iOS or Android app, go to the Music Feed. Then tap Play on the DJ card to start listening.
The DJ will then start playing a selection of songs with brief commentary. We can confirm that during quick tests of the feature prior to launch. The voice did sound real even as it inserted personalized content, like references to bands you frequently stream. In terms of music selection, it didn’t seem to be any more noteworthy than a custom Spotify playlist at first. But in theory, DJ will get better with time.
