The Pioneering Launch
SES, a leading satellite operator, has achieved a monumental feat with the successful deployment of two additional O3b mPOWER satellites. This significant milestone occurred on November 12, 2023, at 4:08 PM local time, with the satellites being launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, USA. This launch marks the addition of the fifth and sixth satellites to the O3b mPOWER system, completing the required constellation of six medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites. This development paves the way for SES to offer unparalleled high-performance network services characterized by high throughput, low latency, unparalleled flexibility, and consistent service availability.
Expanding the Constellation
In a strategic move to enhance its satellite network, SES disclosed last month that it would expand the O3b mPOWER constellation with two additional satellites manufactured by Boeing. This expansion will increase the total count to an impressive 13 satellites. Notably, this additional investment aligns seamlessly with SES’s current committed CapEx envelope.
Satellite Progress and In-Orbit Validation
The first four O3b mPOWER satellites, launched last year, have already reached their designated orbital positions. They are currently undergoing comprehensive in-orbit checks. These checks include a series of meticulous system validation tests, covering both the space and ground components of the system, ensuring the integrity and performance of the satellites.
Enhancing Global Connectivity
In 2023, SES has demonstrated its commitment to advancing global connectivity. The company has successfully deployed and tested over 160 O3b mPOWER terminals across the existing O3b constellation. These efforts cater to a diverse range of customers, including those in mobility, telecom, government, and enterprise sectors.

A Statement from the CEO
Ruy Pinto, CEO of SES, expressed his optimism about the latest developments: “With the fifth and sixth O3b mPOWER satellites launched and going operational in the next few months, we are gearing up to deliver the high-performance connectivity services our customers need. By building resiliency into the network, we are confident our customers will be able to depend on us to deliver the reliable and secure connectivity required to run their operations.”
Looking Ahead: O3b mPOWER’s Commercial Service
SES anticipates the commencement of the O3b mPOWER commercial service during the second quarter of 2024. This launch is not just a step forward for SES but a giant leap in the realm of global satellite communication, promising to revolutionize how connectivity is delivered across the world.
