In an industry-shaping announcement, New Relic—provider of the comprehensive observability platform for engineers—today revealed the general availability of New Relic Live Archives, transforming log management as the first scale-out system to support instant access to historical logs. Unlike traditional log management systems which require logs to be rehydrated, reloaded, re-indexed, or re-transferred across multiple systems in order to be able to access different data types, Live Archives keeps historical logs active and enriched. In doing so, the feature provides engineering teams the ability to easily respond to regulatory inquiries, dramatically lowering compliance risks and slashing the traditionally massive costs for historical log compliance by up to 75%, with up to seven years of log retention—thereby providing one of the most cost-effective compliance tools available on the market solutions.
The Dilemma and the Costs of Long-term Log Retention
As logs must be retained by organizations for years by regulations including HIPAA, U.S. Executive Order 14028, Basel II Accord, CIS, PCI DSS, SOX, and SOC 2, Information Technology and engineering teams have traditionally been left with few—and often costly—options for long term log storage. The dichotomy between expensive hot storage solutions and labour intensive cold storage options has plagued IT and engineering for years, causes unforeseen costs and operational headaches.
“Most log data is unused until it’s needed and some data is only needed for compliance purposes or pulled for postmortem analysis,” said IDC Group Vice President for Operations Stephen Elliot. “Keeping data in stagnant archives is not practical or worth the cost, as the expense often exceeds the value. However, the need to access data quickly when it is required and in a cost-effective way is in demand, and any solution that offers both is a win for users.”
Breaking Boundaries in Log Storage
Live Archives stands as a beacon for innovation, offering a quick, accessible solution for long-term log storage, which is equips organizations to much better contain their compliance risks. Its features include:
- Instant Access: Historical logs can be queried and analyzed immediately by engineers from the familiar environment of the New Relic Data Platform.
- Cost Efficient: Live Archives eliminates data ingress and egress and indexing and reformatting costs, resulting in significant cost savings.
- Simplified Process: Live Archives allows up to seven years of log retention in an active state without manual intervention — making it easier to store and more accessible.
- Quick Setup: A simple New Relic Query Language (NRQL) rule configures log storage with no need for additional log collectors.
“As Bed Bath & Beyond moves forward as a company, we’ve also taken the opportunity to consolidate our observability tooling. We’re excited to leverage New Relic live archives, allowing our engineers to tap into insights and learn from our historical logs data while also meeting compliance requirements for retaining data. All of which allows us to deliver the superior digital experience our customers expect at every touchpoint,” said Bed Bath & Beyond, formerly Overstock, VP of Software Engineering, Eddie Hughes.

New Relic Chief Product Officer Manav Khurana said, “It’s getting increasingly difficult for organisations to adhere to technical regulatory compliance requirements, especially with generative AI being integrated into their already complex tech stacks. When critical legal discovery and compliance audit requests arise, IT and engineering teams need quick and easy access to the crucial compliance data in their historical logs. Live archives is an extension of New Relic’s log management capabilities and empowers teams to keep their log data in one place while providing instant access, deeper visibility, and greater context, which helps simplify historical log analysis and streamline regulatory compliance.”
New Relic Chief Architect, Asia Pacific and Japan Peter Marelas, also expressed his thoughts on the subject, “The breadth and diversity of the Asia Pacific region poses an added challenge for organisations seeking to comply with varying regulations around log retention. New Relic live archives enables engineering teams to access historical logs promptly to respond to regulatory requests, reducing compliance risks. At a fraction of the cost of other log storage solutions, live archives offers APAC organisations a truly cost-effective compliance solution in an increasingly complex regulatory environment.”
Live Archives is available globally and free of charge at an introductory price of US$0.005 GB per month until September 1. To learn more about Live Archives, visit our Webpage and Blog.
