Nvidia Corporation, a leading multinational technology company, announced on May 30, 2023, its ambitious project to construct Israel’s most advanced AI supercomputer. The initiative caters to the rapidly escalating demand for AI applications across various industries.
The globally recognized chip giant will invest several hundred million dollars into the creation of a cutting-edge, cloud-based system. Nvidia anticipates partial operability of the system, named Israel-1, by the end of 2023.
According to Gilad Shainer, Nvidia’s Senior Vice President, the company has collaborated with approximately 800 Israeli startups and multitudes of software engineers. This intensive cooperation is set to yield one of the fastest AI supercomputers globally, reaching a staggering performance of up to eight exaflops – equivalent to a quintillion calculations per second.

In a recent interview, Shainer emphasised that AI is the most significant technology of our time. He pointed out that large-scale GPUs are essential for developing AI and generative AI applications.
Companies in Israel will benefit greatly from this development, gaining access to a supercomputer they didn’t have before. Shainer elaborated, “This system is a large-scale system that actually will enable them to do training much quicker, to build frameworks and build solutions that can tackle more complex problems.”
The Israel-1 system is the brainchild of the former Mellanox team, an Israeli chip designer that Nvidia purchased for nearly $7 billion in 2019, outbidding Intel Corp. In the future, Nvidia may utilise this system to collaborate with partners outside of Israel.
