In a significant stride towards enhancing maritime sustainability, PPG (NYSE: PPG) has announced its collaboration with RightShip, a pioneering digital maritime sustainability platform. This partnership is part of RightShip’s esteemed Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program, which is dedicated to fostering the development and adoption of groundbreaking solutions aimed at creating a sustainable future for the maritime industry.
The highlight of this collaboration is PPG’s innovative PPG SIGMAGLIDE® 2390 biocide-free silicone fouling release coating. Notably, it stands as the only hull coating to receive approval through RightShip’s rigorous product review process for the Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. This endorsement underscores its significant contribution to achieving a zero-harm maritime industry and accentuates its positive sustainability impact.
Christopher Saunders, Chief Maritime Officer at RightShip, elaborates on the program’s mission: “By connecting manufacturers with shipowners and educating charterers about new technologies, the RightShip Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program fosters a system that supports and recognizes those who invest in safety and sustainability on board vessels.”

Ariana Psomas, PPG’s Global Segment Director for New Build and Dry Dock, Protective and Marine Coatings, expressed her pride in the partnership, saying, “We are proud to be part of this program, which recognizes the sustainably advantaged benefits and higher efficiency and durability of our biocide-free PPG Sigmaglide 2390 coating. It helps vessels achieve instant power savings of up to 20 percent with a speed loss performance of less than one percent, contributing to a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of up to 35 percent in comparison to traditional antifoulings.”
The remarkable performance of PPG Sigmaglide 2390 is attributed to PPG HYDRORESET™ technology. Upon immersion in water, this technology modifies the coating, creating an almost friction-free, nonstick surface that prevents marine organisms from recognizing or adhering to it. This results in industry-leading low-friction properties and exceptional fouling control, ensuring up to 150 days of idle performance.
Psomas further highlighted the importance of the right hull coating for shipowners aiming for substantial power and emission savings. “For shipowners, achieving significant power and emission savings will require radical improvements in design and operating efficiency, so choosing the right hull coating is critically important. That’s why we’re seeing more and more shipping companies adopt low-friction silicone coatings,” she said.
