“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take center stage in Sydney by officially inaugurating the culturally rich ‘Little India‘. This eagerly anticipated event has been in the pipeline since 2015, championed by the Indian diaspora, and the Harris Park business community.
Modi’s visit, planned for 24th May, coincides with his attendance at the Quad security meeting. Although his schedule is yet to be confirmed, the Indian business community in Harris Park is already preparing for a warm welcome.
The conception of the ‘Little India‘ project has been a collaborative effort. Andrew Charlton, the Member of Parliament for Parramatta, has been instrumental in coordinating with the Albanese government to secure a $3.5 million commitment. This significant investment includes a grand gateway entrance, beautification of streets, and festive lighting to illuminate the ‘Little India’ locale.
Charlton stated, “We aim to make Prime Minister Modi’s visit meaningful to our local Indian community. Establishing the Little India Gateway would significantly resonate with the community here.”
Sanjay Deshwal, President of the Little India Harris Park Business Association, explained that business owners are thrilled about the developments. They are prepping to adorn their shops with Indian flags and floral embellishments in anticipation of Modi’s visit.
Deshwal pointed out, “Prime Minister Modi’s visits attract millions of viewers worldwide. His laying the foundation stone at the Gateway will seal Little India’s global reputation and provide a huge boost to Harris Park and Parramatta.”
‘Little India’ will be a beacon of cultural authenticity and culinary delights, primarily for those with a love for the Indian subcontinent. “We believe this vibrant place, enriched by a $3.5 million grant, will become an iconic location for both the Indian community and global visitors to experience the Indian culture,” Deshwal added.
