In a significant move towards bolstering its digital infrastructure, George Town witnessed the inauguration of the Penang Internet Exchange (PIX), a pivotal development by global internet exchange leader DE-CIX, in collaboration with Digital Penang. This new hub is set to revolutionize data exchange in the region.
PIX: A Catalyst for Localized Internet Traffic
The establishment of PIX marks a strategic shift towards localizing internet traffic exchange within Penang. Global Connectivity at Penang’s Doorstep
PIX isn’t just a local hub; it’s a gateway to global connectivity. With the ability to exchange internet traffic with over 100 countries, Penang is set to attract a myriad of internet-centric businesses, from content providers to delivery networks. This enhanced connectivity is a magnet for investments, fostering the adoption of cutting-edge digital applications like the Internet of Things and Virtual Reality, and propelling the region into the Industry 4.0 era.
DE-CIX: Weaving a Global Digital Tapestry
Wong Weng Yew, a board member of DE-CIX Malaysia, emphasized the significance of Penang joining the extensive DE-CIX ecosystem. “With over 3,400 data centers globally, Penang is now intricately woven into a vast digital tapestry,” he stated. This integration is crucial for businesses relying on applications that demand ultra-low latency, potentially less than one millisecond.
The Road Ahead: Expansion and Education
Starting with 10 founding members, PIX has ambitious targets to expand its network to 50 within three years. With an investment of approximately RM20 million earmarked for the next decade, the initiative isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about education. An academy is in the works to empower users with the necessary skills to leverage this ‘Swiss Army knife of connectivity.’
The launch of PIX is more than just an event; it’s a testament to Penang’s commitment to its digital future. As the region steps into this new era of connectivity, the possibilities for growth, innovation, and transformation are boundless.
