Socialbakers, the leading social media management platform, has pulled social media data on top movies in the lead up to the 92nd Academy Awards. Widely perceived as a relevant piece of social commentary, it’s The Joker that’s leading the way in terms of fan growth and interactions on social. Scoring almost 8K average interactions per post and almost 333K total interactions on Facebook from 1st January 2020, The Joker content is highly engaging. On Instagram, The Joker received 2.3M interactions, more than double that of Marriage Story and making up more than 50% of all movie page interactions. However, on Twitter, the movie Parasite is the most mentioned movie with over 10K interactions.
Despite having millions of followers and a highly engaging content feed, Netflix productions aren’t stealing the show on social media. Netflix has a great track record of generating social media buzz via memes and viral content, but the promotion of both The Irishman and Marriage Story seem to have missed some buzz in the social stakes. This could be because Netflix has only posted about the films approximately 15 to 20 times on Instagram and Facebook in the last month.
The most active movie profile is Little Woman, posting almost 60 posts in one month on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Little Women posted the same content on all three platforms, which does not tend to yield success on social media, where audiences and successful formats differ from platform to platform.
