Success can mean many different things to many different people. Passion, spirit, drive, guts, or whatever name you put to it, is not the only factor that determines âsuccessâ.
Success can mean many different things to many different people. Passion, spirit, drive, guts, or whatever name you put to it, is not the only factor that determines “success”.
All that talk about pushing through, making sacrifices, hustling, and doing whatever it takes to achieve everything that you have put on your “vision board” requires conscious consideration of other elements beyond wishful thinking or seer positivity.
Especially in business, you need to have a useful product, excellent service delivery, a solid business plan, good technical know-how, pay attention to quality, and seek continuous improvements – just to name a few.
Having high motivation means nothing if one does not have the right competencies – knowledge, skills, and behaviour, that goes along with it.
On top of that, one must have the resources required (e.g., money, material, manpower, machinery, time) and be clear of what needs to be done to acquire those resources.
For example, if your definition of success is owning a Ferrari 488 Spider, then the resource you need is definitely money. In order to have RM1.6 million to spare for a car, first, you would need to have the opportunity to earn a significant amount of money. According to financial experts, one should spend at most 20% of their yearly gross income on a vehicle. So, by crunching some numbers we can conclude that you need to be earning RM8 million a year or RM22,000 daily to get your Ferrari comfortably (no bank loans involved).
In short, it is clear that just being motivated will not cut it – you need knowledge, skills, and the right behaviour to have a shot at acquiring the resources needed for any goal you set for yourself.
I am not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but sincerely this is the clarity of thought that we are to have – and the honest truth that people need to hear, whether they like it or not. Then, as trainers of the subject matter, we help them develop the competencies needed for them to reach the targeted level required. Teach the lessons that need to be learned, show the actions that need to be taken, and guide them to develop the appropriate behaviours to excel.
Motivators should not lie, instead, give them the know-how to achieve their goals.
