Progress has been made on the 5G frontier in Malaysia as the 5G Dual Network Implementation Task Force accomplishes a significant agreement on equity participation and 5G access with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). The major telecommunication service providers including CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, U-Mobile and YTL Communications are set to finalize negotiations on share ownership in DNB. The consortium of companies will support the growth of the 5G network, operated by DNB, with a goal to achieve 80 per cent coverage in densely populated regions by the close of 2023, before transitioning to a dual network model early in 2024.
Fadzil clarified that the firms will undertake all necessary governance actions to complete the transition. In unison with these developments, DNB’s 5G network infrastructure, which as of June 30, offers 64.7 per cent coverage in populated areas, is on a steady path to meet the set target.
Maxis, complying with its earlier commitment, has kick-started the process to enter into a 5G access agreement with DNB, after finalising a series of related issues on July 11. Maxis customers can anticipate access to 5G services post-shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting slated for next month.
Fadzil also noted that CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, U-Mobile, and YTL Communications are already providing 5G services, having signed the 5G access agreement with DNB in the preceding year.
