Lush’s Sustainable Journey Grows in Malaysia
The British brand known for its fresh, handmade cosmetics, Lush, has recently opened its doors to a new store at Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur. This marks a significant milestone as the tenth Lush store in Malaysia, a journey that began in 2018. The expansion across Klang Valley, Johor, Kuantan, and Penang is not just a growth story but a testament to Lush’s commitment to a beauty revolution that respects humans, animals, and the planet.
A Commitment to Environmental Preservation
In Malaysia, Lush has been a vocal advocate for environmental conservation. Their efforts are particularly evident in their coral planting initiative and their renowned packaging-free products. These initiatives have led to a substantial reduction in plastic waste, equivalent to the weight of 76 blue whales, or about 13.8K tons globally.
Dr. Harvinder Harchand, the Director of Lush Malaysia, explains, “In our stores, customers can experience Lush’s products being sold without packaging, or as they call it “naked” products. The idea behind naked products is to reduce the cost that would typically incur with packaging, enabling the products to be made using better ingredients, suitable for the customers’ needs.”
Promoting Social Responsibility and Recycling Efforts
Beyond environmental activism, Lush is deeply committed to social responsibility. The Charity Pot program is a shining example, where 100% of sales (excluding local taxes) are donated to support animal protection, environmental, and human rights groups. This initiative is focused on funding grassroots movements that address the root causes of societal issues.
The Bring It Back scheme further highlights Lush’s commitment to sustainability. This recycling program encourages customers to return empty packaging in exchange for discounts or free products, fostering a closed-loop recycling system. This is particularly significant given that only about 9-12% of global plastic is recycled.
Dr. Harvinder adds, “At Lush, we hold on to the belief that a business should be ethical and all trade should be fair. This is reflected through our products and how we conduct our business. It’s no secret, consumers are becoming increasingly conscientious about the impact of the products they buy. We want to make sure when customers purchase our products, it’s not only beneficial but resonates with their values. Customers should be rest assured that the production of Lush items is ethical and safe – from the sourcing of materials right to when it reaches their hands.”
