The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has outlined various goals in its strategic plan for 2022-27, including promoting entrepreneurship among students and faculty by setting up an INR 100 Cr Innovation and Entrepreneurship fund, identifying five Centers of Excellence to rank among the top three globally in their respective areas, and creating a more diverse group of faculty, students, and staff to engage in nationally relevant and globally recognized basic and translational research.
Additionally, IIT-M aims to introduce new programs in various fields such as health policy studies, computational linguistics, disability studies, environmental, digital, and medical humanities.
The director of IIT-M, V Kamakoti, emphasized the institute’s vision to have students from all parts of India, particularly rural areas, associated with them. To better enable these programs, the institute has set a timeline to develop infrastructure that would support them by 2027. This forward-looking plan is expected to propel them towards attaining global excellence in their endeavors.
In light of the current situation, Indian educational institutions are urging their students and staff to set up their own startups while pursuing their studies. Such initiatives have been recently announced in an effort to support this effort. The AIIMS-Delhi administration recently announced plans to roll out a startup policy for its medical students, partnering with other Indian academic institutes and large corporates to provide business management exposure to medical graduates.
In addition, various state governments have established startup hubs in their respective regions to boost the startup ecosystem. States such as Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh have introduced startup policies, while Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have revamped their policies.
