It is critical to understand what you can and cannot control in life.
This allows you to concentrate your efforts on improving what you can and accepting what you can’t. It can also contribute to an increase in inner serenity and contentment.
Some of the things you can’t control or change in life are:
- History. The past has passed us by. You only have the present moment. You can’t undo what happened in the past, no matter how much you want to. You can’t go back in time and undo your mistakes, but you can learn from them.
- Other individuals. You can’t change other people’s minds or actions. You have no influence over them. You can, however, control and direct your reaction to them.
- The change itself. Change is an unavoidable occurrence. Fear of change can generate anxiety and cause you to cling to something that cannot remain constant. Everything is changing, and the sooner you embrace it, the happier you will be.
If you want to be happy, you must accept the things over which you have no control.
Instead, concentrate your attention on the aspects of your life that you wish to improve and can actually change.
