After 25 long years, Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a momentous return to the Dewan Merdeka for the Umno general assembly 2023, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on June 9th, 2023.
Arriving as the guest-of-honour, Anwar Ibrahim was greeted by Umno President and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Notable figures from Barisan Nasional’s component party, such as MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, MIC President Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) President Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, were also in attendance.
Interestingly, another significant presence was Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, marking his comeback to the Umno headquarters after a suspension in 2016.
In a showcase of unity, leaders from various unity government parties, such as Gabungan Parti Sarawak Chairman Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, Amanah President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Amanah Deputy President Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, and Upko President Datuk Ewon Benedick, joined Anwar at the assembly.

This general assembly, which began on June 7, will last until June 10, with a total of 2,888 delegates attending. As part of the assembly’s traditions, the official flag “Sang Saka Bangsa” was hoisted, marking the commencement of the party’s general assembly.
Under the watchful eyes of the assembly attendees, Ahmad Zahid, accompanied by Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Secretary-General Datuk Seri Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, hoisted the flag, marked by the party’s official song, Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat. The Umno president is expected to deliver his presidential address later, followed by debates.
