Google is set to phase out continuous scrolling from its search results, starting with desktop versions from June 26 and extending to mobile in the subsequent months. As per a report from Search Engine Land, a platform dedicated to the search engine industry, a Google spokesperson stated that “continuous scroll will be removed today from desktop search results and the feature will be removed from mobile results in the coming months.”
Previously, before the implementation of continuous scrolling, users needed to click the “Next” button to navigate to subsequent pages of search results. Google is now reverting to this traditional pagination method on desktops. The search results will now display a pagination bar at the bottom, allowing users to click on “Next” or select a specific page number they wish to view. For mobile users, the transition to the next page will be facilitated by a “More results” button at the bottom of the screen.
Google explained to Search Engine Land that “this change is to allow the search company to serve the search results faster on more searches, instead of automatically loading results that users haven’t explicitly requested.” The feature of continuous scrolling was first introduced to mobile devices in October 2021 and to desktops in late 2022.
This modification follows closely on the heels of Google’s recent rollout of Gemini AI, which was integrated into the side panel of workspace applications such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This development was announced at the I/O developers conference in May, where Google made Gemini AI accessible to users.
