2023 is a promising year for Malaysia’s tourism sector, shining bright in the constellation of Asian travel destinations. Malaysia, the beautiful country known for its dazzling cities and vibrant culture, is now the eighth most-searched destination for Chinese travellers on Airbnb, according to fresh data from the home-sharing platform.
Imagine the streets of Kuala Lumpur buzzing with travelers, exploring local markets, and feasting on delightful Malaysian cuisine. The search for accommodation by Chinese tourists in Malaysia has skyrocketed tenfold this summer, reflecting the allure of the country’s enchanting beaches, historical sites, and exotic jungles.
The numbers tell an optimistic story – early summer outbound stays searched by Chinese guests on Airbnb have surged nearly sixfold compared to 2022. This summer seems different, though, with about half of the searches spanning medium to long-term stays, seven days or longer. Could this be the signal of a more profound connection between Chinese travelers and Malaysia?
Airbnb’s general manager for South-East Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Amanpreet Bajaj, shares this sentiment, expressing how domestic tourism in Malaysia is burgeoning. “Domestic tourism has shown its strength and resilience, bringing immediate and positive impacts on local economies,” states Amanpreet, reflecting the nation’s positive spirit.

But the breakfast story unfolds a unique tale – Malaysians seem to prefer skipping breakfast when booking accommodations. According to a survey by Agoda, only 23% of Malaysians choose accommodations with a breakfast package. This makes them the lowest among 10 Asian markets.
Why might this be? Agoda’s regional vice president of South-East Asia and Oceania, Enric Casals, provides insight. “Perhaps it’s a preference to start the day later, or to explore local food outside,” he suggests.
Certainly, breakfast is more than just a meal in Malaysia. It’s a choice, an exploration, a journey.
Whether it’s flexibility in planning or economy in booking, the Malaysian travel trend reveals an exciting landscape of opportunities and preferences.
If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia or seeking to understand this growing trend, it’s worth noting that sometimes, starting the day with a local meal outside your accommodation can be the real charm of Malaysian tourism.
