Singapore, 30 August 2024 – Changi Airport, renowned for its exceptional blend of convenience and beauty, has once again outdone itself with the launch of its inaugural sunflower-themed showcase, ‘A Sunflower Sojourn.’ This breathtaking display features over 5,000 sunflowers, representing more than ten exquisite varieties, thoughtfully arranged across 20 unique locations throughout the airport.
The floral spectacle, which extends outdoors to Hub & Spoke, is the largest sunflower display ever staged at an airport, making it a must-visit attraction for families, travelers, and flower enthusiasts alike. The event runs until 30 September 2024, perfectly timed to coincide with the September school holidays and Mid-Autumn Festival.
Floral Marvels Across Changi’s Terminals
Visitors entering Terminals 2 and 3 will be greeted by awe-inspiring floral displays, including larger-than-life sunflower topiary sculptures towering at five and eight meters tall, respectively. Among the varieties on display are the classic bright yellow ‘Sunrise,’ the rare red and yellow ‘Florenza,’ and the delicate pastel pink ‘Strawberry Blonde’—all meticulously cultivated in Changi Airport’s own plant nursery.
Mr. Ang Siew Min, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations Development at Changi Airport Group, expressed his excitement, stating, “Our lush gardens at Changi Airport have always been more than just a feature – they are an experience that embodies the warmth and hospitality of our airport. We are thrilled to unveil this vibrant Sunflower Sojourn display, as an extension of the Sunflower Garden to the other parts of the airport. The sunflower, a symbol of joy and cheerfulness, perfectly aligns with our service philosophy of delivering delightful and positively surprising experiences to all visitors.”
Cultural Significance and Ecological Importance
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, sunflowers hold deep cultural significance and play a vital role in our ecosystem. Visitors can delve into the sunflower’s impact on art, agriculture, and history, with dedicated exhibits throughout the terminals. At Terminal 2, the rotating five-meter-tall sunflower topiary serves as a symbol of this beloved flower’s influence across various mediums, from poetry to visual arts.
For over 3,000 years, sunflowers have also been a cornerstone of agriculture, valued primarily for their seeds, which serve as both a nutritious snack and the source of sunflower oil—one of the world’s most widely produced vegetable oils.
