In an Australian-first, Dementia Australia will officially launch the ‘Hold the Moment’ podcast—a unique series created by people living with dementia—at the iconic Sydney Opera House on Tuesday, 20 August. This pioneering initiative is designed to reach and support others impacted by dementia, offering them a sense of community and connection through shared experiences.
The launch event will feature a compelling panel discussion led by Dementia Australia Patron, Ita Buttrose AC OBE. Joining her on the panel are several of the podcast’s courageous and passionate contributors, including Jim Rogers, co-host of ‘Hold the Moment’ and a Brisbane resident living with younger onset dementia, and Hamish Macdonald, respected journalist and broadcaster, whose father is affected by dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s.
Macdonald shared, “This podcast is a way to amplify the voices of those who are too often unheard. It’s a privilege to be part of this project and to help share these important stories.”
A Platform for Voices Unheard
‘Hold the Moment’ is not just a podcast; it’s a movement that allows those living with dementia to tell their stories, share their challenges, and offer insights that can help others facing similar journeys. With a lineup of diverse voices, the podcast captures the nuances of living with dementia across Australia, highlighting both the struggles and the moments of joy.
Jim Rogers, who co-hosts the podcast, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “Living with dementia can be isolating, but by sharing our experiences, we hope to reach others and let them know they are not alone.”

Meet the Voices Behind the Podcast
The panel at the launch event will include other inspiring podcasters such as Heather Cooper from Bealiba, Victoria, who is also living with dementia. Additionally, several other contributors will be present, including Catherine Daskalakis and Pam Eade, both living with younger onset dementia, and Juanita Hughes and Dominique O’Leary, a former carer, all from Brisbane.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with other podcasters from different parts of Australia, including Ann Pietsch and Anthony Pollock from Adelaide.
Dementia Australia’s CEO, Professor Tanya Buchanan, will also be present to provide further insights into the organization’s commitment to supporting those living with dementia.
B-roll footage, behind-the-scenes development shots, and interviews with the podcasters and spokespeople will be available upon request.
A Collaborative Effort
The podcast also features contributions from experts who are working tirelessly to better understand and address dementia. Associate Professor Stephanie Rainey-Smith, a neuroscientist based in Perth, and Professor Nola Ries, a co-founder of the Dementia Law Network, will contribute remotely, sharing their extensive knowledge on the scientific and legal aspects of dementia care.
This event is set to be a significant milestone for Dementia Australia, as it highlights the power of storytelling in creating a supportive community for those affected by dementia. The ‘Hold the Moment’ podcast aims to be a beacon of hope, shining a light on the lived experiences of those who are too often left in the shadows.
