A recent survey conducted by Amazon Singapore, in partnership with YouGov, has highlighted local consumers’ shifting preferences in the realm of online shopping. The study found that shoppers are increasingly prioritizing product quality and authenticity, while pricing still maintains its hold as the primary consideration for online purchases.
The study, involving over a thousand Singaporean residents, not only gave insight into local consumer behavior, but also focused on the factors influencing customer satisfaction and trust in online shopping platforms.
“At Amazon Singapore, we combine affordability, product quality, and authenticity to surpass customer
expectations,” shared Leo Laforgia, the Country Manager for Amazon Singapore. “This commitment extends to Prime Day, where we offer exclusive deals, exciting product launches, and unmatched savings for Prime members, showcasing our dedication to offering a quality shopping experience that can be trusted and saves our customers time and cost!”
Key insights from the survey suggest a significant increase in the value shoppers place on product quality and authenticity. Although 70% of online shoppers still cite cost as their main consideration, a notable 80% are willing to pay more to ensure product authenticity and quality.

Interestingly, more than half of the online shoppers revealed that product quality (58%) has become a more important factor than it was two years ago, followed by product cost (57%) and shipping cost (47%).
The survey also revealed that for certain product categories like Health & Personal Care (41%) and PC & Electronics (38%), online shoppers prioritize quality and authenticity over cost, indicating a growing consumer appreciation for value beyond just the purchase price.
As per the survey results, the responsibility of ensuring product quality and authenticity is largely seen as shared between the seller, distributor, and the e-commerce platforms. Consumers heavily rely on the platforms and sellers to ensure the integrity of their purchases.
Furthermore, the survey pointed out that while shopping deals continue to attract online shoppers, there is a close second preference for value-for-money products.
Amazon Singapore, in response to these changing consumer demands, is actively working on enhancing its authenticity verification mechanisms, customer service, and seller screening processes.
