Renowned insurance company, AIA Group, is stepping into a new chapter. It recently announced the appointment of Mari Elka Pangestu and Ong Chong Tee as independent non-executive directors (INEDs) and members of the nomination committee, commencing 1st July. This decision underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging diverse, global experience to drive its strategic vision.
Mari Elka Pangestu, a luminary in global development policy, brings a fresh perspective from her recent role as Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships at the World Bank. Concurrently, Ong Chong Tee, an esteemed figure in Singapore’s financial realm, joins the team, carrying over three decades of expertise with the Monetary Authority of Singapore, which has molded him into a versatile leader.

While these new appointments bring a wave of excitement, it’s also a moment of gratitude and farewell for Swee-Lian Teo, who is set
to retire as an INED effective 1st September. Her departure will also mark the end of her tenure as the chairman of the risk committee and a member of the nomination committee. Stepping into the role of risk committee chairman is the seasoned AIA INED, Chow Chung Kong, with the transition taking place from 1st September.
AIA Group Chairman, Edmund Tse, spoke highly of the appointments, emphasizing the invaluable international experience Pangestu and Tee bring to the table, enriching the already seasoned Board. Lee Yuan Siong, AIA Group Executive Director and Group Chief Executive, paid tribute to the outgoing Teo, lauding her significant contributions to AIA during her eight-year tenure.
The group has not confined its strategic moves to the boardroom alone. Early this year, it made waves in the sports world by appointing English footballer and Tottenham Hotspur striker, Harry Kane, as its brand ambassador. This collaboration illustrates AIA and Kane’s shared commitment to promoting mental health and resilience.
The partnership will kick-start a campaign led by the Harry Kane Foundation (HKF) emphasizing the importance of health and mental wellbeing. A self-produced animation by Kane, titled “Harry Kane: Resilience”, is set to inaugurate the campaign, underscoring the significance of positive thinking, self-belief, and support from others.
