TikTok, the social media giant known for its short-form videos, has made a grand entrance into the music streaming arena. With the recent launch of TikTok Music in Singapore, Australia, and Mexico, it’s clear that the platform is setting its sights on becoming a major player in the global music industry.
In Singapore, the October 20, 2023, launch was met with much anticipation. Previously, the service was exclusive to a select group of beta testers. But now, the general public can enjoy TikTok’s premium-only music streaming service.
What sets TikTok Music apart? It’s the innovative features designed to enhance music discovery. For instance, “Party It” offers personalized collaborative listening, while “FYP Tuning” lets users swipe right to select music scenes and moods. But perhaps the most exciting feature is “Tonik”, a music discovery personal assistant powered by advanced technology, ChatGPT. This AI-driven assistant can answer a myriad of music-related questions, from artist details to concert news.
However, the excitement doesn’t stop in Singapore. TikTok Music also went live in Australia and Mexico around the same time. These launches followed successful pilot phases that began in July. Before this expansion, TikTok Music had already made its mark in Brazil and Indonesia, where it seamlessly replaced ByteDance’s existing music streaming service, Resso.
Ole Obermann, ByteDance’s Global Head of Music Business Development, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm. He emphasized TikTok Music’s unique approach, combining the thrill of music discovery on TikTok with a top-notch streaming service. The goal? To make it a breeze for users to save, download, and share their favorite viral tracks.
Yet, every new venture has its challenges. One of the hurdles TikTok Music faces is its music catalog. While it boasts a vast collection in countries like Indonesia and Brazil, the newly launched markets are missing some major music catalogs. Why? It seems TikTok is in the midst of negotiating a fresh licensing deal with Universal Music. The aim is to offer users a comprehensive music catalog, ensuring they have access to all their favorite tunes.
TikTok Music’s aggressive expansion strategy, combined with its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology, positions it as a formidable force in the music streaming industry. As it continues to grow and evolve, music lovers worldwide have much to look forward to.
