California, USA mourns as John Warnock, a driving force behind global software giant Adobe, passes away at 82. Together with Charles Geschke, Warnock brought Adobe to life in 1982.
Shantanu Narayen, the current Adobe chair and CEO, released a heartfelt letter expressing the weight of Warnock’s absence. He underscored how this day stands somber not just for Adobe, but also for the tech sector where Warnock shone as a beacon for years.
Narayen stated, “Countless innovations bear Warnock’s fingerprint. Yet, beyond his tech genius, it was his spirit, passion, and staunch commitment to a value-driven company that has left an indelible mark on us at Adobe. Warnock’s knack for identifying customer-pleasing and value-creating technologies was uncanny.”

Narayen then fondly remembered a recent interaction with Warnock. “A few months back, we celebrated Acrobat’s 30th anniversary. Post-event, we discussed Firefly’s potential in shaping future creative tech. His eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as he lauded our progress. Yet, in classic Warnock fashion, he shared insights on elevating it further.”
Under Warnock’s visionary leadership alongside Geschke, Adobe rolled out its first offering: Adobe PostScript. This product didn’t just succeed; it revolutionized desktop publishing.
In 2000, Warnock chose to step down as CEO but continued to influence Adobe’s trajectory. He shared the chairman board position with Geschke till 2017 and post that, remained an active member of Adobe’s board of directors.
Warnock’s departure leaves an immense void, but his legacy will continue to guide and inspire.
