The digital transformation journey in Malaysia is about to get a significant boost as the telecommunication companies (telcos) prepare for a major announcement about the implementation of 5G networks. According to the Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil, the news expected by the end of June will have far-reaching effects on the industry.
Fahmi revealed this exciting news at the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) monthly assembly. The Minister indicated that access agreements had already been signed, paving the way for the telecom giants to roll out 5G services. “I anticipate some significant announcements from the telcos. They will partner with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and equity holders to bring this to fruition,” he said.
It was noted that as of May, the 5G network coverage in Malaysia had reached a commendable 62.1%. This achievement underlines the nation’s commitment to expanding digital connectivity and ensuring its citizens enjoy the benefits of technological advancement.

Fahmi also mentioned a key meeting of the 5G task force, co-chaired by Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican and KKD secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa. The task force seeks to guarantee that the 5G network implementation adheres to the established guidelines, reinforcing the government’s commitment to transparency and effectiveness.
The government has unveiled plans to implement a dual 5G network once the current rollout under DNB has covered 80% of populated areas. Fahmi explained that the dual network model would follow globally recognized terms and practices, enhancing the scope and reliability of the network.
The Minister also highlighted the government’s decision to expedite the formulation of a cybersecurity bill. This move is in response to the need for every nation to establish a regulatory body for the cybersecurity industry. The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) will lead this initiative, with CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) playing a critical role in clarifying its functions to avoid overlap.
On June 15, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the urgency of drafting a Cyber Security Bill, ensuring that all relevant aspects of legislation are finalized promptly.
The forthcoming updates on the implementation of the 5G network will not only elevate Malaysia’s digital infrastructure but also pave the way for a more secure cyberspace. All eyes are now on the telcos as they gear up for the much-anticipated announcement.
