Malaysia’s MCA President, Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong, emphasized that moderation is pivotal to Malaysia’s diverse national struggles. This pragmatic approach is crucial in strengthening the bonds between different factions of the nation and gaining increased public support.
“Umno President, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has clearly communicated the need for moderation in both Barisan Nasional and Umno’s approach,” said Dr. Wee Ka Siong. “The pressing concern now is to consolidate our bonds within the component parties, thus amassing more public support. Echoing this call will solidify our united front, although it will pose a significant challenge.”

The discussion took place at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, June 9. Dr. Wee also highlighted the long-standing tradition of Umno’s invitation to its governing partners to attend its general assembly.
“There are no qualms regarding the presence of DAP,” he said. “We are in accord with Barisan. As a decade-long attendant of the general assembly, I believe in upholding this tradition. The current political climate necessitated a few adjustments by the organizers, but I feel as though it’s business as usual. We’re all gathered here to lend an ear to our colleague Ahmad Zahid’s address.”
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also the chairman of Pakatan Harapan, graced the Umno general assembly. Leaders of various parties in the unity government, such as Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairman Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, and Upko president Datuk Ewon Benedick accompanied him. Notably, Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who had left the party following his 2016 suspension, made a return to the Umno headquarters.
