In a significant development, the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI) in Malaysia has given approval to Tesla to import Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) into the country. As a result, Tesla will establish a head office, introduce Tesla Experience Centres, and Tesla Service Centres, and create a Supercharger network in Malaysia. Although a firm date for opening the office has not been set, the move is anticipated to improve local businesses’ involvement in the global and domestic Tesla ecosystem while also opening more skilled and higher-paying job opportunities for people in the BEV industry.
MITI Minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, stated that Tesla’s decision to enter the Malaysian market is a testament to its confidence in Malaysia’s economic fundamentals and conducive business environment. He also expressed his commitment to improving the ease of doing business in Malaysia, promoting it as a pro-trade, pro-industry, and pro-investment destination. Additionally, the established Electrical & Electronics ecosystem in Malaysia will be leveraged to make it the preferred investment destination for electric mobility technology.

The programme aims to increase local market demand for BEVs and advance the growth of the complete ecosystem that will enable BEV adoption. It also seeks to entice leading BEV manufacturing companies to invest in Malaysia. Tesla is the front-runner for this MITI venture.
