In an exclusive interaction with Marketing In Asia on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prashant Sawant, Co-founder of Catalyst Wealth, shares some practices to bring more women into the Boardroom, his thoughts to bridge gender equality issues & much more.
What should be taught to our children about Gender Equality?
Gender identification and other people’s views begin in childhood. Children must understand that gender roles have no bearing on their identity, capacity, or career choices. Gender equality is an important topic to teach children in their early years. Gender quality is not something that can be taught in a flash. It must be incorporated into children’s daily lives. Social preconceptions can only be broken if our next generation is raised in a positive environment. The best approach to instill these changes in youngsters is through the information they consume i.e. Books, TV series, publications, and other media.
What could be some of the social practices that can bridge the gender equality issues from grass root level, and what change do you think it can bring to society & the workplaces?
Talk to women and girls, they are often excluded from global and national decision making. Their opinion will definitely bring a change. Only they will be able to tell about what they need.
We should make our education more gender sensitive. It is crucial for girls to graduate from high school as citizens capable of shaping a more equal society.
I’ve noticed that women are quite underpaid in corporate sector. They work as efficiently as a man does. But don’t get rewarded equally. We also need a worldwide coordinated movement for equal pay for equal work.
And I think like this we would be able to bridge the gap. These practices will empower our women and we’ll be able to make progress as a society.
What practices shall be followed to bring more women into Boardroom?
Despite a minor increase in the number of women in leadership roles, women still do not have equal access to opportunities as men. There are few techniques in my mind that can bring a change in boardroom. Firstly, I think company should adopt company-wide programmes aimed at increasing female engagement. Many businesses have diversity initiatives and mentoring programmes in place to increase gender diversity across the board. Advising women early in their careers can help them become more qualified candidates for top leadership positions later on. Secondly, company should Increase the number of people who are being considered for board positions. Companies should go outside the typical C-Suite, which is predominantly made up of men, to establish a road for women to gain board seats more swiftly. Recruiting businesses must also be open-minded when presenting applicants to avoid contributing to the ‘club environment,’ and they should aid to initiate a debate about diversity. These are the two techniques that I can think of as of now.
What’s your Pledge in one line?
I volunteer to become the catalyst for change in society.
